The Eve-o-mat:
“mythic awareness in every bite”

The Eve-o-Mat is an “anti” vending machine. It is a crude approximation of a vending machine in size and appearance (6 ft high x 30 inches deep x 30 inches wide), constructed of wood. The artist sits inside and dispenses an “apple of knowledge” wrapped with a bit of wisdom, a “poisoned apple” containing a shot of rum, or a tasty “Golden Bough dessert”, when a customer inserts payment in the appropriate coin slot.

The Eve-o-Mat is meant to call attention to the faceless, meaningless transactions that are taken for granted in fast food culture in our desire for quick consumption and gratification. By interrupting and making strange an economic transaction which is normally performed without much thought, the artist hopes to raise consciousness about the alienated nature of human labour in the food industry, the loss of food’s symbolic value, and to question the way we present, prepare, and consume food.
